DiffServ-based Traffic Handling Mechanisms for the UMTS Core Network

The DiffServ framework has been proposed as a candidate for the provision of QoS support in the UMTS Core Network, not only in the literature but also in the 3GPP specifications. This paper proposes specific traffic conditioning, scheduling and buffer management algorithms for the UMTS Core Network, based on the concepts of the DiffServ framework. Simulations show that the proposed mechanisms can provide the requirements imposed by the four traffic classes defined within the context of the UMTS QoS architecture.
